Owning a Sur-Ron Ultra Bee: care and quick fixes
Is an Ultra Bee hard to look after? Not really. There's no engine oil, no air filter and no spark plug. Most of the care is a quick check before you ride and keeping the chain, brakes and battery in shape.
This is a short guide drawn from the Ultra Bee owner's manual. The manual that comes with your bike wins wherever it says something different, and its maintenance schedule sets the service intervals.
Before every ride
- Battery: enough charge on the display for the ride you're planning.
- Chain: tension and condition.
- Brakes: squeeze each lever; the wheel should lock fully.
- Throttle: with the key off, it turns smoothly and snaps back to idle.
- Tyres: pressure (check it cold), tread depth and any damage.
- Lights: headlight, turn signals, brake and tail light.
Chain
- Slack should be 10–25 mm, measured with the bike on a stand.
- Keep it clean and lubed; a dry or rusty chain wears the sprockets too.
Brakes
- Replace the pads once either front or rear is under 1 mm thick.
- Top up with fresh DOT 4 fluid from a sealed bottle if the level is well below a third of the sight glass.
Tyres and bolts
- Replace a tyre once the tread reaches its wear mark.
- Check fasteners regularly and tighten to the torques in the manual.
Battery: charging and storage
- Never charge it below 0 °C (32 °F). A full charge takes about 4.5 hours at room temperature.
- It rides happily from -20 to 45 °C (-4 to 113 °F); 10–30 °C is best.
- Parking it for weeks? Charge to 60–80% and keep it at 10–30 °C (50–86 °F).
- Check it every month while it's stored; below 30%, charge it back to 60–80%.
- Use the charger that came with the bike.
Won't power on? Try these first
- Make sure the battery is in place and its plug is pushed fully home.
- Charge it. Low-battery protection shuts the bike off.
- Very hot or very cold? Battery or motor temperature protection may be on; let it come back to normal and try again.
- Lift the side stand, and check nothing is holding a brake lever.
- Has the bike been tipped over? Stand it upright, then switch the key off and on again.
- Key fully turned? Try it once more.
Still nothing? Stop there and with your bike's details. Don't open the battery or controller yourself.
