Owning a Sur-Ron Light Bee X: care and quick fixes

Is a Light Bee X hard to look after? No. There's no oil change, no air filter and no spark plug. Most of the care is checking a few things before you ride and keeping the chain and brakes in shape.

This is a general routine. The owner's manual that comes with your bike wins wherever it says something different.

Before every ride (2 minutes)

  • Tyres: pressure, cuts and worn tread.
  • Brake pads: plenty of pad left.
  • Chain: not dry, not sagging.
  • Battery: charge level on the display.
  • Display: no warning code showing.
  • Lights work.

Every 100 km

  • Clean and lube the chain.
  • Look at the brake pads and the brake fluid level.
  • Look over the fork and rear shock for oil on the seals.

Every 500 km

  • Everything in the 100 km list.
  • Check the wheel spokes are tight.

Every 2,000 km

  • Replace the brake pads and chain if they're worn.
  • Check the bearings (wheels, swingarm, steering) for play.
  • Fork and shock oil and brake fluid: service or replace as your owner's manual says.

Every 5,000 km

  • Expect brake pads and chain to need replacing around here if you ride hard, and have the bearings checked.

Once a year

  • Have a workshop look the bike over, even if it's running well.

Battery: charging and storage

  • Charge only when the battery is between 0 °C and 60 °C (32–140 °F). If it's been in a freezing garage or a hot truck bed, let it settle first.
  • Parking it for weeks? Store the battery at about 50–70% charge in a dry, frost-free place.
  • Check it once a month while it's stored; if it's below 50%, charge it back to about 70%.
  • Use the charger that came with the bike.

Won't power on? Try these first

  1. Make sure the battery is seated and its plug is pushed fully home.
  2. Check the battery's main switch (the breaker in front of the battery) is on.
  3. Charge it. Low-battery protection shuts the bike off to protect the cells.
  4. Very cold or very hot? Let the bike come back to normal temperature and try again.

Still nothing? Stop there and or email [email protected] with your bike's details. Don't open the battery or controller yourself.
